Obtaining copies of Instrumentality Project fansubs
Copies of our fansubs are available on tape (VHS or
SVHS) as well as in compressed digital format
( DivX-encoded video).
Tape copies are created directly from our source material; for tape-based
distribution, these can be considered master copies. Compressed digital
files are somewhat lower resolution (typically 640x480), substantially
compressed (~200KBps) versions of our internal video files; these should
not be considered master copies.
Only titles listed below as available
are available for distribution at this time.
We have no plans to distribute DVD-R or other copies of our titles. If
you see copies of our fansubs on DVD (for sale or otherwise) that are
alleged to be “official,” then you are looking at a bootleg.
(Some fansub distributors may offer DVD transfers of our titles
– tape captures or AVI conversions to DVD video format –
but they should be pretty clear about what they are offering. No one
has DVD master copies of our titles, and any claims to the contrary are
fraudulent.)
Tape masters are available upon request, for the cost of a blank tape
plus postage. (See the table to the left for current costs.) You can
pay via PayPal or
money order (or even via cash if you are willing to run the risk of
it being lost in the mail). We do not accept checks. Any title that
is listed below as being available
may be requested on tape.
If you are a fansubber who still subs to tape (actual tape masters,
not AVI dumps to tape!) and you are interested in trading SVHS masters,
email us and perhaps
we can work something out.
Our tapes are in NTSC format; unfortunately, we do not have the equipment
to create tapes in PAL or other video formats. (This should not be a
problem for you if you are requesting tapes in North America, but it may
be an issue from other parts of the world.)
For those who prefer DivX files rather than tapes, but who do not
have a suitable Internet connection with which to
download them, we also
offer copies of our DivX files on CD-R. (These are just copies of the
AVI files on CD, not VCDs.) We can fit about 650 MB per CD, but
we cannot split an episode across multiple CDs. Generally this
works out to three episodes or a single movie file per CD, but please
be sure to check your math before submitting a request. (If you are
not sure whether something will fit, please
email us with a list
of episodes that you want and we will let you know how many CDs will
be required.)
Tapes available
for requesting
See the instructions below for details
on how to request copies, and for information on
DivX versions.
If you are looking for titles that we have subtitled, and they are not
listed here, then they have been licensed and are no longer
available.
How to request tapes or CDs
When requesting tapes, we will need the following information:
 Your name and address
The titles that you want copies of (and how many)
What types of tapes you want (VHS or SVHS)*
What payment method you will be using
* SVHS tapes will not
play in a regular VCR! Do not request SVHS unless you know
that you have a VCR capable of playing these tapes.
When requesting CD-Rs, we will need the following information:
 Your name and address
The episodes (AVI files) that you want copies of
What payment method you will be using
You can mix tape and CD requests if you wish (as long as the payment
total adds up and everything is being shipped to a single address).
Be sure to include all of the information listed above, or your request
will be delayed while we try to contact you and sort things out.
For CD requests, please note that we can fit about 650 MB per CD, which
generally equates to three episodes or one movie file per disc. Please
check your math ahead of time, and if you are uncertain as to whether
something will fit, please
email us before sending
any payment.
See the sidebar at the left for media and shipping costs.
If you will be paying via PayPal, include the above information in the
PayPal payment email, and send it to paypal@instrumentality.org.
If you are not paying via PayPal, send an email containing the
above information to
fansubs@instrumentality.org.
We will send you an email reply containing our (physical) mailing address
and the name to put on the money order. Note that even if you already
have our address from a previous request, you still need to send us an
email before mailing off your request! Otherwise, unless we are expecting
a letter, we may not check the P.O. box for weeks, and your request may be
substantially delayed.
Once we have received your email, we will send you a response so you
will know that we have received and are processing your request. (If
you don’t hear back from us within a day or two, something may have
gone wrong, and you should email us again.) We will also email you once
your tapes have been sent out (usually within two days of receiving the
payment, unless our request load is unusually high at the time –
see the sidebar to the left for our current estimated turnaround time).
Our focus has always been on tape-based fansubbing; however, many fans
these days do not even own a VCR any more, and so we have begun to
release DivX-encoded copies of our titles in addition to VHS and SVHS
copies. These DivX files are created directly from our (uncompressed)
digital masters; they are not tape captures (nor are they
“digital masters” of any sort). Unless otherwise noted, all of
these files are compressed to 640 x 480 at a bitrate of around 200KBps,
using the DivX MPEG-4 codec for
video and an MP3 codec for audio. They can be decoded using the
3ivX (Mac OS, Windows, UNIX, Amiga,
BeOS) or DivX (Mac OS, Windows, Linux)
codecs, or by any video software capable of playing back DivX video
streams from an AVI file. ( VideoLAN
Client is a very popular player that is available for most operating
systems.) We do not recommend Windows Media Player, as it has been known
to have issues playing back files using the DivX codec under some system
configurations.
Copies of all of our DivX-encoded episodes are available using
BitTorrent; for
a list of torrents, see
Lilith, our
experimental BitTorrent tracker.
Please note that we do not have any sort of IRC presence, nor do we have
any officially sanctioned third-party download sites. Certainly we do not
wish to stop anyone from sharing copies of our fansubs (as long as the
series in question remains unlicensed); but we do not officially endorse
or otherwise recommend any particular site or source other than
Lilith.
Additionally, we do not actually have the bandwidth to host file downloads
ourselves; we rely upon friends and associates of the Project to keep the
files on Lilith “seeded.” (Lilith is just a tracker – a
server that helps peers connect to one another.) Remember, by keeping your
BitTorrent connection active (even after you have completed your download),
you are helping others to be able to get copies of the file as well. If
at all possible, please help others by leaving your BitTorrent sessions
active!
Below is a table listing all of our fansubs that have been made available
in digital format. You can click on a file’s title (or filename) to
bring up more information on the file, including file properties, encoding
information, the script revision used, and a list of all known
download sites/distribution points for obtaining a copy of the file.
Note that the filenames listed in the table below are the names that we
used in our original distribution copies; subsequent users may have
renamed files (or possibly even renamed a different file to one of these
names). You can always compare a file’s size and its MD5 hash if you
are uncertain as to whether or not it is one of our files. (A file’s
MD5 hash is listed on its information page.)
