Anime Conventions
There are two major anime conventions in our area: Project A-Kon
( www.a-kon.com), held each summer
in Dallas, Texas; and Ikkicon
( www.ikkicon.com), held each
winter in Austin, Texas.
Project: A-Kon is a large anime convention held each year in Dallas, Texas,
usually over the first weekend of June. A-Kon 19 (A-Kon 2008)
is being held May 30th to June 1st, 2008 at the
Adam’s Mark
Hotel and Convention Center in downtown Dallas. For information on
hotel reservations (at special convention rates), special events, dealer
information, or other A-Kon related questions, please visit the official
A-Kon home page: http://www.a-kon.com/
Instrumentality Project discount
Each year, the Instrumentality Project offers A-Kon pre-registrations at
the A-Kon group rate, which results in a 15% discount off of the normal
pre-registration price. (Children’s tickets are not eligible for this
discount, since they are already much cheaper than adults’ tickets.)
You do not need to be an Instrumentality Project member in order
to participate in the pre-order; you need only submit your order through
us so that we can submit all of the pre-orders at once as the
Instrumentality Project group order.
The Instrumentality Project’s A-Kon
pre-registration program has ended for this year. For information
on registering directly through the A-Kon organizers (without the group-rate
discount), visit the official site:

Frequently Asked Questions
These are the most frequently asked questions that we receive regarding
the A-Kon discount program. If you have any questions that are not
addressed here, please feel free to email us at:
a-kon@instrumentality.org
Q: How much does it cost to pre-register?
A: We have concluded our pre-registration drive for this year. For information on direct (non-discounted) registration, please visit the official A-Kon site.
Q: Do I need to be an Instrumentality Project member in order to get the discount?
A: No. This program is open to everyone.
Q: The A-Kon organizers raise the registration prices each year as the convention approaches. If the price goes up after I pre-register, do I have to pay the difference?
A: No. Once you pre-register through the Instrumentality Project, your registration is secured, regardless of any future price increases.
Q: Are you officially affiliated with Project: A-Kon?
A: No.
Q: Is this legitimate? Do the A-Kon organizers know what you’re doing?
A: Yes.
Q: Are you secretly making money off of this?
A: No. In fact, it actually costs us a fair sum to cover such things as postage, price increases for early registrants, etc. We do this to help spread the enjoyment of anime; as with other aspects of the Instrumentality Project, this is not a profitable enterprise.
Q: When/how will I receive my tickets?
A: If you attend UT Anime Club showings, we will attempt to give you your ticket in person; otherwise, we will mail your ticket to you at the address that you provided when registering. Please note that the tickets typically arrive sometime in May, and many people (students in particular) are moving or are on vacation during that time; be sure to provide a mailing address that will reach you in May.
Q: What if I don’t get my ticket in time? What if I lose it?
A: While it is much faster and more convenient for the A-Kon staff if you have your ticket, you can still claim your badge and other A-Kon membership goods as long as you have a valid photo ID.
Q: Can I submit requests for several people at once?
A: Yes, just remember to get all of the required information and a payment from each person. If you want all of your tickets to be given/mailed to a single person (i.e., you will handle distribution of the tickets to your friends), then we only need a single address; however, we do need a real name and a badge name for each person in your party. Payment can be made using individual checks, etc., or in one large sum, as long as it all adds up correctly.
Q: Do you accept credit cards?
A: Yes. You can use a credit card if you pay via PayPal. (We do have to pay a service fee for each electronic transaction, though, so if you can pay via another method, it would be greatly appreciated.)
Q: What email address should I use when sending funds via PayPal?
A: You can send funds to us at: paypal@instrumentality.org
Q: I can’t make it to A-Kon this year; will you have this discount program again next year?
A: Yes, we do this every year.
Q: We saw the Instrumentality Project on the “Chairman’s Special Thanks” list at A-Kon back in 2002. What was that about?
A: We have no idea (but we are happy that they like us). We did send them 26 episodes of anime to show that year, and the pre-registrations that we send in each year add up into the thousands of dollars, which is probably nice to receive. Still, it could have been something else entirely. (They didn’t mention anything to us about it; it was a surprise to us as well.)
Q: I want to be a vendor, or I need other A-Kon info. What should I do?
Q: I have a question that isn’t answered here. What should I do?
